Clemson's Key to Victory: Phil Mafah's Big Day

09/06/2024

For Clemson to secure a win against App State, Phil Mafa needs to have a standout performance. We've been hearing about the "dirt raid" offense for over a year now, and it's time to see it in action. The concept is simple: a successful run game opens up the field for the passing game. But so far, we haven't seen this strategy fully realized.

Cade Klubnik, our quarterback, hasn't yet proven he can consistently hit his targets or be a deep threat. This means we can't rely solely on our passing game to carry us. Instead, we need our offensive line to create opportunities for Mafa to break through. If Mafa can get close to 100 yards, it will significantly boost our chances of winning.

Our team has a wealth of talent, especially in the running back department. I expect to see not just Mafa, but also some of our backups like Jay Haynes and Keith Adams Jr., getting some action. Coach Dabo Swinney has mentioned wanting to see more rotation, and this game is the perfect opportunity for that.

App State is no pushover. They have a strong offense and a quarterback, Joey Aguilar, who can make plays. Their defense is consistent and doesn't give up big plays easily. This means our offense needs to be methodical, hitting easy plays and maintaining long drives to wear them down.

One of the biggest issues we've faced is not utilizing our playmakers effectively. We have a loaded wide receiver room with talents like Antonio Williams, Tyler Brown, Bryant Wesco Jr., and TJ Moore. These players need to be on the field and getting targets. The fact that some of our top talents only had one reception in the Georgia game is unacceptable. We need to let our stars shine.

Confidence among Clemson fans is understandably shaken after the Georgia game. To restore it, we need to see three things: effective use of our playmakers, a decisive win against App State, and a defense that causes turnovers. Our defense is championship-level, and we need them to show it by creating turnovers and keeping App State's offense in check.

In summary, for Clemson to win, Phil Mafa needs to have a big game, our playmakers need to be utilized effectively, and our defense needs to step up. If we can do these things, we'll not only win but also restore some much-needed confidence in the Clemson community.
